How do I connect to xbox live?

I purchased a refurbished xbox360 console and much to my dismay the system will connect to the internet, but not to xbox live. I’ve tried connecting it directly to the modem and static IP on my router, I also called my ISP to make sure the ports were open. The support representatives are not any help whatsoever as they just read from a manual.

i just got my xbox360 and created a gmertagwith silver and then when i try to go online with my xbox360 using gears of war 2 it and changed online type to publicxbox live it says your current gamer profile settings donot allow playing online games. To continue all signed-in gamer profiles must have settings that allow online play so how do i alow the settins?

the 5 flash back stages u get free to download onto ur XBOX360 from the gears 2 game…
now my question is
why arent the stages on my game wen i dont have Live Connected?
i dont have a wireless adapter for my xbox yet
but wen i plug in the phone line
the stages are there
howcome?
how can i get the stages to stay rather then havin the damn phone line connected?
does it have to have live connected in order for those 5 stages to be playable??
its really annoyin
i mean ther free
why shud i have to be online
or to have my box online jus to play the damn stages??
